Discover the wild. Defy your limits.Discover Tanzania from a different perspective. One shaped by horses, wildlife and spectacular landscapes. Our safaris take you beyond the ordinary, into remote corners of the country that few have ever travelled.
Our story
New on the blockWe grew up in southern Tanzania, where the bush was never something you visited, it was simply part of life. We were fortunate to spend our childhoods surrounded by horses, big skies, dusty roads, wildlife, and people who understood that adventure often begins where the tarmac ends.
We are certainly the new kids on the block, but between us we carry decades of experience in horses, conservation, tourism, and life in the African bush.
Kwandala started from a love of horses long before there was a business plan. Growing up around them, riding became less about staying within boundaries and more about crossing them, venturing beyond fenced land and familiar routes, using horses as a means to traverse the unexplored. Those journeys soon became the foundation of what is now Kwandala Horse Safaris.
The name Kwandala, meaning "to journey into uncharted territory," perfectly reflects who we are and why we do what we do. At its heart, Kwandala is simply an invitation to experience Tanzania as we have always known it: remote, honest, wonderfully unpredictable, and best explored on horseback with curiosity as your guide.
What People Are Saying
“Having explored the country extensively on traditional safaris, nothing compared to venturing into such remote wilderness on horseback. Tara has an incredible instinct for finding places that few people ever experience. Sleeping under the star-filled skies, gathering around a campfire and cantering across vast open spaces where vehicles simply can’t go is an adventure unlike any other. If you’re looking for a safari that goes far beyond the ordinary, this is it.”
- Holly Voorspuy“We spent five days exploring the Ruaha River. Pristine bush, the Africa that time forgot. An abundance of game, much of it completely unhabituated to tourists. Fast, meandering canters through open bush, slowing down when the wildlife or terrain dictated. The horses are fit, well-schooled and responsive. At night, a beautiful elevated camp above the Ilusi sand River, sitting around the fire. A proper adventure!”
- Angus Ruddle“It was a bit of a dream come true for me and it completely surpassed my expectations. The camps locations were stunning, food was delicious and bed was comfy and warm. Your team of ponies are calm, brave and beautifully trained. Each one has a story. The guides passion, knowledge and adventurous spirit made everyday unforgettable. My highlights were the lions roaring during our bush breakfast and watching the elephants crossing the river from between Zenzi’s ears.”

This is the foundation of Kwandala. Everything begins with the horses.
the next generation
For over 20 years, we have carefully refined our breeding program, focusing on temperament, soundness and longevity. Alongside this, sits our rescue program. We give refuge to horses that have been neglected, misunderstood and mishandled from all over Tanzania. Each horse is given time to reset and rebuild through methods rooted in trust, patience and clarity. Our approach to training is grounded in horsemanship. Horses are allowed to think, to learn and to develop at their own pace. The end goal is not just performance, but to have a willing, balanced partner that understands and enjoys their role.
